PhotoSummer, now in its second year, is a collaborative initiative that represents and actively promotes historical and contemporary photography in New Mexico. Taking the rich legacy of photography in New Mexico as a point of departure, the exhibitions and public programs around PhotoSummer represent the continued energy and support of the photographic arts in the region. The main goal of PhotoSummer is to feature photo-based programming every summer through exhibitions, talks, workshops and more. UNM Art Museum will continue to partner each year with organizations in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and throughout the state in order to highlight the very best of photographic practice and scholarship.

PhotoSummer 2016 is organized by UNM Art Museum and in Albuquerque and in Santa Fe. It features public programs in both cities, focusing on photography that spans regional, national and international artists, curators and scholars. This year we have partnered up with , and in Santa Fe, to expand the programming and offer more opportunities for people to engage with the photographic medium.

As We See It: Contemporary Native American Photographers

June 18 – September 17 at                      

As We See It: Contemporary Native American Photographers considers how photography can communicate personal perspectives on identity and place. Featuring the work of Jamison Chaz Banks, Tom Jones, Larry McNeil, Wendy Red Star, Matika Wilbur, Will Wilson and Tiffiney Yazzie, this exhibition combines landscapes, portraiture and appropriated images to consider how photography can offer a new perspective on the world and the process of photography. For the artists in As We See It, the media of still photography serves as a means to accomplish their goals, whether describing environmental issues or creating connections in Native North America. By engaging with the subject interactively, the images become a shared product that illustrates the personal, living stories of the artists and their worlds.

 Future Tense

Highlighting select CENTER photographers, Future Tense is an exploration of the socially, politically and psychologically complex relationship we have with the places we inhabit.  Moving within and beyond the physicality of here and now, the photographers in this exhibition trace the tensions between nature and artifice; isolation and interconnectedness; past and present; and the physical and psychological…all of which reveal the tenuous balance that defines the path of our collective future.  Artists include: Delaney Allen, Antoine Bruy, Pelle Cass, Phillip Cheung, Christine Collins, Tamas Dezso, David Favrod, Lori Hepner, Dina Litovsky, Judy Natal, Eric Pickersgill, David Schalliol and Daniel Traub.

Starn Brothers: Absorption of Light

June 18 – September 17 at  

 516 ARTS presents two large elemental photographs from the body of work Absorption of Light by twin brothers Doug and Mike Starn, who for more than 20 years have been known for working conceptually with photography, and are concerned largely with chaos, interconnection and interdependence. The ill-fated moths of the Attracted to Light series are caught moments before self immolation, drawn to the light that kills them, their images pinned, momentarily, on photographic paper. Their subjects are both emblems of and witnesses to the dualistic character of light, with its power to give life and to destroy it, to illuminate and to blind.

Accidental Photography

In this mobile art gallery, professional New Mexican photographers exhibit unintentional images that have been saved from the editing room floor or the computer trash bin. The captivating photos might be narrative or abstract, but all give a glimpse into an unexpected way of seeing the world.

Dispossessed

June 17–August 26, 2016 at 

CENTER in collaboration with the Santa Fe University of Art and Design presents Dispossessed. This juried exhibition is an exploration of the internal and external experiences of marginality in a world where many feel on the fringes and also inside of systems. Dispossessed is an exploration of the condition in which minorities, and those at the margins, now comprise the majority of humankind. It reveals the psychological and emotional expressions of marginality experienced universally and the ways we all experience feeling like an outsider. Artists include CENTER members from around the region.

THE FENCE

July 9 – September 30, 2016 at Railyard Art Park, Santa Fe

American Society of Media Photographers/New Mexico brings to the Railyard Art Park in the summer of 2016. Since its launch in Brooklyn four years ago, THE FENCE has consistently attracted exceptional work by talented photographers from around the world, sharing powerful photographic narratives with a diverse audience of millions of visitors annually. Each year, an international jury of photography professionals is called upon to review and select 40 photographers whose submitted work exemplifies the essence of “community” across cultural boundaries and geographical lines. The selected projects will be presented in a series of large-scale, curated, outdoor exhibitions in five cities in the United States: Brooklyn, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, and now, new in 2016, Santa Fe. THE FENCE exhibition in Santa Fe will include a section highlighting the projects of New Mexican photographers, juried by luminaries in the New Mexico photographic community.

Senior Thesis Show

The Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) in collaboration with CENTER presents the Senior Thesis Show. Representing the photographic vanguard, SFUAD’s students will present a range of work representing current trends and concerns in photography. Artists include: Ysidro Barela, Rebecca Buchleiter, Craig Duncan, Chelsea Garcia, Pamela Houser, and Forrest Soper.
